Class Structure

Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Warm-Up & Bounce

Shaking the body loose and sinking into the bounce — the weighted, rhythmic pulse that lives under every hip-hop step and gets you locked in with the beat.

10–25 mins

Groove Foundations

Old-school staples such as the running man, the wop and the prep sitting next to fresher new-school grooves and isolations — the raw material behind any routine or cypher.

25–40 mins

This Week's Routine

Weaving those grooves into a short set piece on a current or classic hip-hop track, dropping in attitude and texture as the eight-counts build.

40–50 mins

Freestyle & Musicality

Guided improvising across changing tempos, training your ear to grab the kick, the snare and the silences so your moves reply to the track instead of trampling it.

50–60 mins

Cypher & Cool Down

A relaxed circle where anyone who fancies it can step in and drop a groove, rounded off with a proper stretch to settle the heart rate.

About Hip-Hop Dance Classes in Bournemouth

Hip-hop is the dance that rose out of the 1970s block parties of New York, growing up beside the DJs, the MCs and the wider culture that wrapped around them. Our weekly hip-hop classes in Bournemouth trace a line straight back to those roots. We dig into the bounce and the rock, the party steps of the old school and the grooves of the new, the isolations, the freestyle and the kind of musicality that lets you truly hold a conversation with a beat. It's the grounded, social side of hip-hop — driven by feel and attitude rather than a polished camera finish — and every bit of the movement's heritage rides along with it.

Bournemouth bubbles with energy through its seafront nights and the big student crowd at BU and AUB, but a steady weekly class where adult beginners and improvers can nail the foundations properly has been hard to pin down. To get one rolling we've taken our town-centre studio on Commercial Road, a stone's throw from the Triangle and the Old Christchurch Road bars, pulling in dancers from East Cliff, Boscombe, Westbourne and the full seven miles of sand. Everything we teach stays grounded in the culture, yet it's pitched so anyone curious can pick it up cold.

You don't need any background or special gear to start — just something comfy to move in and clean trainers with flat soles. The groove is where every single person begins, and the rest stacks on top week after week. Have a look through all 20 of our dance classes in Bournemouth, or gather the crew for a one-off street dance hen party.

What Hip-Hop Gives You

Rooted in the Culture

You pick up the genuine foundations — the bounce, the party steps and the grooves that sparked it all — rather than a routine simply pasted over a hip-hop track. The history and the feel come built in.

Dance the Music

Hip-hop sharpens your ear for the kick, the snare and the gaps between. Your body learns to settle in the pocket, snap accents and add texture instead of merely counting along.

Find Your Own Flavour

Freestyle hands you a way to speak through movement with no locked-in routine. Your bounce, your attitude, your voice — hip-hop gives you the space to make every move unmistakably yours.

A Sneaky Workout

Bouncing, dropping levels and powering through grooves serve up full-body cardio. You'll break a sweat, grin from start to finish and head home buzzing.

Your Hip-Hop Dance Journey

From your very first bounce to holding it down in a cypher — here's how things usually take shape.

Week 1–4

Settling Into the Bounce

Your First Sessions

We open with the bounce, the rock and one or two beginner-friendly two-steps. The early aim is to unlock the body, let your weight ride down into the beat and grow happy looking loose instead of locked-up.

What to Pack

Loose, easy-moving clothes plus a flat, cushioned pair of trainers. There's nothing to buy, and because self-expression is half the point, throw on whatever feels most like you.

Month 2–3

Stacking the Grooves

Party-Step Toolkit

Running man, wop, prep, smurf and a clutch of new-school grooves and isolations start filling your kit, handing you the moves every routine and circle leans on.

First Taste of Freestyle

Bite-sized, coached improv built around easy prompts — a single groove, eight counts at a time — so leaning on your instincts feels playful rather than nerve-wracking.

Month 4–6

Groove With Meaning

Steps With a Story

Lengthier sequences that marry the foundations with genuine personality, alongside the history of each step — its origins and the message it carries.

Riding the Layers

Locking onto individual parts of the track — the drums, the bassline, the vocal, the silences — the richer musicality that sets a real dancer apart from someone just ticking off counts.

Month 6+

The Cypher Dancer

Holding the Circle

Comfortable throwing down in a cypher, at home inside choreography and shaping a style of your own, with the odd jam or showcase slot on offer whenever the mood takes you.

Where to Go Next

Head off into breaking, popping or locking through our street dance class, give commercial a go for a sharper choreography focus, or dive deeper into the local freestyle scene.

Hip-Hop Dance FAQ

The things newcomers tend to ask before their first hip-hop session with us.

I've genuinely never danced — is hip-hop too much for a first-timer? +

Not at all. Step one is always the bounce, that soft, weight-led pulse that powers every move in the style, and once your body finds it the grooves and freestyle slot in on top. Our Bournemouth class is built for raw beginners, easing each step in gently so your opening night feels like a laugh rather than a leap.

Is there a uniform, and what should I pack? +

Wear whatever you can throw shapes in — trackies or loose-fit bottoms with a tee or hoodie — and flat trainers with a bit of cushioning so quick weight shifts feel solid. Bring a bottle of water and a sense of humour for the wobbly first attempts. Your own look is part of the culture, so come as yourself.

How much does a hip-hop session cost? +

A one-off drop-in is £10 with no form to fill and no sign-up fee. Prefer to commit a little? A four-week block is £32, working out at £8 a session. Nothing is tied down with a contract or membership — just rock up on whichever weeks fit around your diary.

Where in Bournemouth are the hip-hop classes held? +

Our weekly regulars gather at the town-centre studio on Commercial Road, moments from the Triangle and the Old Christchurch Road nightlife. We're opening up further spaces around town as numbers grow, so flag it if you'd like a session closer to East Cliff, Boscombe or Westbourne.

How does hip-hop stack up against commercial dance? +

Hip-hop lives in groove, the social party-step vocabulary and freestyle that grew straight from the culture and its street origins. Commercial dance polishes things for the camera, building sharp routines aimed at pop videos and the stage. We run both in Bournemouth, so you can sample the rooted version and the glossy version and follow whichever grabs you.

What separates your hip-hop class from a street dance class? +

Hip-hop here is all about the groove and the party-step toolkit — bounce, rock, isolations, old-school staples and a heap of freestyle. Street dance pushes harder into breaking, popping and locking, the punchy battle styles that each carry their own deep technique. They cross over plenty, yet our focus stays on feel, flavour and foundation rather than power tricks.

Is there much freestyle, and what if my mind goes blank? +

Freestyle threads through from the very first week, but always scaffolded and never sprung on you cold. We kick off with tiny briefs — a single groove, one isolation, eight counts — so making it up feels like messing about rather than an exam. Blanking is completely normal early on, and the guided drills melt it away within a handful of weeks.

What kind of tracks will we be dancing to? +

A broad mix of hip-hop and funk — fat old-school boom-bap, golden-era cuts, gritty funk breaks and fresh tracks with a deep pocket. Tuning your ear to the kick, the snare and the breathing room in between reshapes how you move and how you hear every record from then on.

Does hip-hop dancing count as a proper workout? +

Definitely. Endless bouncing, dropping through levels and driving big grooves stack into a real cardio session that builds stamina, coordination and a strong core. With your head in the music and the moves, the hour vanishes and it rarely registers as exercise at all.

Do you run private or crew hip-hop sessions? +

For sure. Solo tuition and crew sessions can be arranged whenever you fancy, and they're spot on for drilling foundations, tightening freestyle or polishing a routine for a showcase or event. Drop us a line about what you want to crack and we'll line the session up.
