Beginners Class — 60 Minutes

0–10 mins

Warm-Up & Bounce

Loosening the joints and dropping into the bounce — that weighted, easy groove every street style rides before the sharper moves arrive.

10–25 mins

Foundation Drills

Honing in on one style each session — maybe breaking footwork and top rock, maybe popping waves, maybe locking points and freezes — pulled apart move by move until the base feels solid.

25–40 mins

Combos & Crew Work

Threading the drills into short routines, locking into beginner freezes and learning to land the same shapes in time as a crew.

40–50 mins

Freestyle Lab

Guided freestyle games that get you answering the beat and backing your own calls, building the bottle to move without a set count to lean on.

50–60 mins

Cypher & Cool-Down

A loose ring where whoever feels like it drops in for a go while everybody else cheers it on, before we wind down with a stretch.

About Street Dance Classes in Bournemouth

Street dance is the family of styles that grew up on pavements, in car parks and at jams rather than in a mirror-lined studio — breaking, popping and locking at its core. Our weekly street dance classes in Bournemouth keep that energy at the front, drilling the true foundations of each: the footwork and freezes of breaking, the hits and waves of popping, the crisp points of locking. Then we channel it into crews, formations and short routines you can sharpen and perform — movement you own and shape, not a chart sequence copied beat for beat.

Bournemouth throws up the odd workshop and a busy student jam scene around BU and AUB, yet a steady weekly class for adults covering the spread of street styles has been the missing piece. Ours run from the town-centre studio on Commercial Road, a short walk from the Triangle and the Old Christchurch Road bars, on the wide, even floor that footwork, floorwork and crew lines genuinely need. They pull in dancers from East Cliff, Boscombe, Westbourne and right along the seven miles of sand, each style taught with respect for where it came from while staying properly beginner-friendly.

There's no prior training or ready-made crew required to get going — everyone kicks off from the bounce, and the cypher welcomes you the moment you fancy trying it. Bring loose clothes that survive a drop to the floor and flat, soft-soled trainers. Take in all 20 of our dance classes in Bournemouth, or rally the group for a high-octane street dance hen party.

What You Get From Street Dance

The Real Foundations

We teach the roots rather than a watered-down copy — where breaking, popping and locking came from and how the moves are meant to be stacked. Grasp the why and the how lands far quicker.

Movement You Invent

Street dance rewards thinking on your feet. We coach you to answer the music and back your gut, so you walk out able to move with no routine to hide behind.

Sweat Without the Slog

Driving footwork, freezes and snappy transitions hammer your legs, core and stamina — an hour that feels like mucking about rather than a workout you have to endure.

Crew & Cypher Energy

The circle and the crew line turn nerves into nerve. Friendly battles, formations you lock in together and a roomful of people gassing up every turn grow the courage to perform — and hand you a crew that backs you.

Your Street Dance Journey

From your opening bounce to standing firm in a crew line — this is the rough shape of the road ahead.

Week 1–4

Finding the Bounce

Getting Started

Finding the bounce, breaking top rock, a handful of opening popping hits and a simple lock. Loosening the body off and getting comfortable moving with weight, edge and a bit of swagger.

What to Wear

Easy clothes that won't tear when you go down low — joggers, a tee, a hoodie. Soft, flat-soled trainers. Come dressed to move and dressed as you.

Month 2–3

Building Vocabulary

Style Foundations

Digging deeper into breaking footwork, popping waves and locking sequences, picking up the story behind each and beginning to feel which one suits your body.

First Crews

Linking the foundations into short routines and learning to land the same shapes in time with others — the first real taste of formation and crew work.

Month 4–6

Finding Your Flavour

Your Own Style

Committing to the style that's hooked you — drawn-out freestyles, harder combos and freezes, and folding the foundations together into something that reads as unmistakably you.

The Circle

Settled in the cypher, tuned into the room and beginning to show real character. Street dance is a culture as much as a class, and by now you belong in it.

Month 6+

The Street Dancer

Sharper Skills

Freestyling with assurance across a couple of styles, happy to swap rounds in a battle and cooking up combos that carry the originality this scene lives for.

What Comes Next

Throw down at a Dorset jam or battle, specialise in one style, or roll into our hip-hop class for more cultural grounding and a fresh set of grooves.

Street Dance FAQ

The questions we hear most from people sizing up their very first session.

Do I need any dance experience to start street dance? +

Not a scrap. Breaking, popping and locking all sit on top of a loose groove and a steady bounce, and that groundwork is exactly where a first-timer begins. We take each move to pieces and rebuild it slowly, nailing the base before anything sharper goes on, so a complete newcomer and a seasoned regular share the same Bournemouth floor without anyone feeling out of place.

How is street dance different from your commercial or hip-hop class? +

Commercial chases slick, stage-and-screen routines cut to chart hits, while our hip-hop class lives in groove, party steps and freestyle. Street dance is the harder-edged branch — breaking, popping and locking, the freezes and isolations, plus the crew formations and showcase routines those styles feed into. The aim is sharp, performance-ready movement you can drill in unison, not a copy of a music video.

What styles does the street class actually cover? +

We rotate around the cornerstones — breaking's top rock and footwork, the hits and waves of popping, and the crisp points of locking. Week by week you sample each, get the freezes and transitions that join them up, and begin moulding them into tight little routines to perform with the rest of the room.

How much is a street dance session in Bournemouth? +

A one-off session costs £10, no paperwork and no joining fee. Prefer to book a stretch ahead? Four weeks runs to £32, which breaks down to £8 each. There is no membership and no contract; just turn up on the weeks the timetable suits you.

Where in Bournemouth do the street dance classes run? +

Our weekly regulars meet at the town-centre studio on Commercial Road, a couple of minutes from the Triangle and the Old Christchurch Road bars. It has the wide, smooth floor that footwork, freezes and crew formations call for, and we will open further spaces around town — handy for East Cliff, Boscombe or Westbourne — as the numbers climb.

What kit and footwear suit a street class? +

Go for something you can crouch, drop and throw shapes in — joggers or trackies with a tee or hoodie, nothing that traps your arms. Flat trainers with a little cushioning and a flexible sole hold for footwork and protect your knees on the drops. Your style is yours, so rock up looking the way you like.

Will I be made to battle or perform in front of people? +

Battles and cyphers are part of street culture, so we leave room for both every week — a cypher being the circle dancers form to take turns, a battle just a friendly trade within it. As crews come together we also set short routines you can perform as a group. Stepping forward is always your shout, though; plenty of people watch, clap and learn the formation before they take a turn of their own.

Will I get to try breaking, the b-boy and b-girl side? +

You will — breaking foundations run right through the class. We cover top rock, the six-step and other footwork, getting you easy with dropping down and rising back up, plus beginner-friendly freezes. Strength and control build up over time, so the powermoves you scroll past online have a sensible run-in rather than a brutal cold start.

What kind of music plays in a street dance class? +

It depends entirely on the style we are drilling. Locking rides on funk, popping leans on electro and synth-funk, and breaking runs on chopped breakbeats, with hip-hop and a few crossover records dotted between them. The trick is learning to follow the drum and the accent rather than the tune — do that and every track feels different beneath your feet.

Can I book private or crew street dance sessions? +

Of course. One-to-one coaching and small crew sessions can be set up for sharpening a single style, building a routine or getting a group stage-ready for a showcase, battle or event. Drop us a message about your goal and we will build the sessions around it.
